Aimed at “making every student an outstanding person”, Ballakermeen High School provides an extensive, balanced and interesting education，which closely relate to our real life, to develop the greatest potential of their own individuals and the society.
In order to expand the students’ international perspective and help students understand cultural diversities, Ballakermeen High School has already undertaken successful cultural exchanges with China, and has formed a good atmosphere for Chinese culture among teachers and students.
Ballakermeen High School has developed relationship with No.1 High School, Liuyang, Hunan Province since 2006, and during nine years’s constant visit, we both have already established a long-standing partnership. This increasingly strong and healthily developed relationship has encouraged many young students, who have a deep passion for Sino-British culture, to make friends with each other, as well as to choose to learn or work with each other’s language. Some students, such as Jonnathan Wildman, Stephanie Lowey, and David Wildman, have been enrolled in the major of Sinology in Oxford University, Cambridge University or Sheffield University.
To further deepen exchanges and cooperation between the two schools, and to build a bridge between the Isle of Man and China, Ballakermeen High School has proposed to start the idea of “Confucius Classroom” at the beginning of 2013.
Liuyang No.1 High School is a centurial school, with rich cultural heritage. The Confucius’ Temple is preserved in our school to sacrifice Confucius, which has created a unique atmosphere of Confusion culture. Besides, beautiful school environment, advanced facilities and excellent teachers are placed in our school. Since the late 1990s, Liuyang No.1 High School has insisted on employing foreign teachers to teach spoken English and train our English teachers, exerting a favorable teaching effect. After more than 10 years international communication, our school has acquired great achievements and accumulated abundant experience, and has established a sound foundation for the opening of “Confucius Classroom”.
The “Confucius Classroom”, organized by the corporation between Liuyang No.1 High School and Ballakermeen High School, received full support both from the Ministry of Education and the government in the Isle of Man. Meanwhile, Mr. Liu Xiaoming, Chinese ambassador to Great Britain, has expressed that our government thinks highly of the corporation during his visit to the Isle of Man. Moreover, having offered local students“Chinese Class” two years ago, Ballakermeen High School has already made sufficient preparations for the“Confucius Classroom”.
In November, 2013, with the great support from Hanban and Hunan Provincial Education Department, Liuyang No.1 High School, as the principal applicant, declared the establishment of “Confucius Classroom” in Ballakermeen High School to competent authorities at all levels rank by rank. On July 13, 2015, the “Confucius Classroom” was officially inaugrated.
The establishment of the“Confucius Classroom” not only will deepen culture communication and economic cooperation between the Isle of Man and China, but also spread Chinese Culture effectively. As for the Educational process in the future, the “Confucius Classroom” will make efforts in the following aspects:
(“Confucius Classroom” will be under the management of specialized regulatory authority. The Classroom has set up a Working Group, headed by Mr. Yuan Zhangjun, headmaster of Liuyang No.1 High School, and Adrienne Burnett, headmaster of Ballakermeen High School. Mr. Pan Ming, Deputy Headmaster of Liuyang No.1 High School, and Keith James, Deputy Headmaster of Ballakermeen High School also take responsibility. China is the biggest developing country and the second largest economic entity and the IOM is the global business and ideal financial centre, situated in the heart of Europe, so the two countries have a wide range of cooperating prospect. To establish a Confucius Classroom in the IOM will undoubtedly bring about positive influence in cultural and trade communication. In virtue of culture as a bridge, further understanding and recognition of the brilliant Chinese culture will be enhanced to the Manx people. To lay a long-lasting and friendly cultural foundation and push forward the tie between the two regions comprehensively, we will endeavour to improve the quality of the Confucius Classroom, attracting more teenagers, especially the ones in the Isle of Man, to study Chinese and learn Chinese culture. With all these efforts, the Confucius Classroom will shine like a brilliant pearl in the Isle of Man, full of cultural vitality.
